West Virginia University has bolstered its specialist unit by securing a commitment from kicker Peter Notaro, who previously played for Alabama. Notaro announced his transfer to the Mountaineers shortly after the opening of the transfer portal on January 2, 2026. He joins Bryan Hansen, a punter from Colorado State, as part of WVU’s efforts to enhance its kicking game.
Notaro, who hails from Wexford, Pennsylvania, had a limited playing history during his first year at Alabama. Serving primarily as the backup placekicker, he participated in just two games, during which he successfully converted all five of his point-after-touchdown attempts and executed five kickoffs. Despite his limited experience, Notaro’s pedigree is impressive; he was rated as a 5-star recruit and ranked as the No. 4 kicking prospect by the reputable kicking organization Kohl’s Kicking.
In high school, Notaro demonstrated his potential by making 17 field goals over his final two seasons, setting a school record with a long kick of 53 yards. His talents had previously caught the attention of West Virginia prior to his commitment to Alabama, with Penn State, Ohio State, and Pitt also vying for his signature.
WVU’s need for a kicker became apparent during the previous season when Rich Rodriguez brought in Kade Hensley from Coastal Carolina on a one-year basis. Hensley managed to convert 10 of 13 field goals but struggled with extra points, missing one of 32 attempts. With Notaro’s experience and background, he is well-positioned to take on a starting role for the Mountaineers well into the future.
The addition of Notaro brings WVU’s total commitments to 22 for the current recruitment cycle, demonstrating the program’s proactive approach to enhancing its roster. As the Mountaineers look to solidify their special teams, Notaro’s arrival could be a significant step toward future success.
