BISMARCK — In a historic match, Valley City secured its place in the North Dakota Division A volleyball championship for the first time, defeating top-seeded South Prairie-Max 3-1 in the semifinals on March 15, 2024. The victory was marked by a significant milestone for senior outside hitter Kadie Kocka, who recorded her 1,000th career kill. Kocka contributed 17 additional kills during this pivotal match, sealing the win with a decisive point in the fourth set.
The match, held at the Bismarck Event Center, showcased Valley City’s determination as they battled back from a six-point deficit in the fourth set. The final scores were 25-15, 23-25, 25-8, and 25-22, demonstrating the resilience of the fourth-seeded team. Kocka expressed the importance of the victory, stating, “It’s been our goal since Day 1. Going into (the state championship), we just need to stay healthy, stay confident and have the mentality to win the game.”
Valley City Overcomes Challenges to Reach Final
Valley City, with a season record of 26-11, will face No. 2 May-Port-C-G (30-7-1) in the championship match scheduled for 17:30 local time on March 16, 2024. Sophomore outside hitter Skye Nielson played a crucial role in the semifinal, contributing eight kills, including two consecutive points that gave the Hi-Liners their first lead of the fourth set at 18-16. Nielson’s performance was noted by Kocka, who highlighted her impact in high-stakes games.
Head coach Cynthia Klabo praised Nielson, saying, “She’s a gamer, she just wants to win. She can see the court and she just has that fire in her to finish.” The Hi-Liners’ strategy and teamwork were evident as they navigated the match’s ups and downs, including a strong recovery after losing the second set.
South Prairie-Max, with a strong season record of 34-4-1, will compete in the third-place match against No. 3 Central Cass (29-11) at 10:00 on March 16. The Royals had their 18-match win streak ended by the Hi-Liners, who capitalized on key moments throughout the match.
Kocka led Valley City not only in kills but also in defense, recording a game-high 23 digs, while senior Kinlee Sufficool added 22 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Nora Pederson contributed defensively with two blocks. For South Prairie-Max, senior outside hitter Skotti Beck was a standout performer, tallying 19 kills and 17 digs, while seniors Hattie Heer and Abby Mikkelson each registered seven blocks.
As Valley City prepares for the state championship, the team’s excitement is palpable. “We’re super pumped,” Nielson said. “This is just amazing.” The Hi-Liners aim to secure their first state championship title against a seasoned May-Port-C-G team that seeks its fourth title and its first since 2002. With both teams ready for the challenge, the championship promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the season.
