Texas Longhorns Dominate Texas Southern with 111-45 Victory

In a commanding performance, the No. 4 Texas Longhorns triumphed over Texas Southern with a decisive score of 111-45 on November 12, 2023, at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. This victory marked Texas’ 28th consecutive win on home soil, underscoring their dominance in the early part of the season.

Three players led the charge for Texas, with Madison Booker, Aaliyah Crump, and Teya Sidberry each contributing 18 points. Crump, a highly touted freshman, achieved her season-best performance, while Sidberry, who transferred from Boston College, showcased her shooting accuracy, going a perfect six for six from the field in just 15 minutes of play. Booker also displayed efficiency, converting six of seven attempts.

The Longhorns capitalized on Texas Southern’s struggles, converting 33 turnovers into 50 points. Texas Southern, despite a strong start to the season, fell to 2-1 and struggled against Texas’ aggressive full-court defense. The Lady Tigers shot just 33% from the field and committed 21 turnovers by halftime, which allowed Texas to establish a commanding 60-25 lead.

Key Contributions and Defensive Prowess

In addition to the leading scorers, Kyla Oldacre added 11 points and nine rebounds for Texas. The Longhorns excelled in the paint, scoring 62 points and netting 23 fast-break points. Defensive efforts were highlighted by Rory Harmon and Breya Cunningham, both of whom recorded three steals each.

Texas Southern’s leading scorer, Taliyah Logwood, who had averaged 15 points in the previous games, faced difficulties, fouling out within 11 minutes and failing to make any shots. The Lady Tigers’ depth was further tested as two other players also fouled out during the match.

Texas showcased precise shooting, hitting a remarkable 71.4% in the first half, including 13 successful layups out of 17 attempts. Despite their offensive prowess, Longhorns head coach Vic Schaefer expressed concerns about missed free throws, as Texas has struggled with accuracy in recent games. They recorded free throw percentages of 45.8%, 64.3%, and 60% in their last three outings, an area that could become problematic as they prepare for upcoming challenges.

Looking Ahead

The Longhorns, now 4-0 this season, are set to face tough competition in the upcoming Players Era tournament in Las Vegas. They will take on No. 3 UCLA and either No. 2 South Carolina or No. 15 Duke during the Thanksgiving week. Meanwhile, Texas Southern will look to rebound as they host Arlington Baptist on November 16, 2023.

With this latest victory, Texas continues to solidify its position as a formidable contender in women’s college basketball, while Texas Southern aims to regroup and address the challenges highlighted in this matchup.
