In a commanding performance, the Buffalo Sabres defeated the New York Islanders 5-0 on January 27, 2024. Jason Tucker scored two goals, while goaltender Alex Lyon made 26 saves, marking his ninth consecutive victory and tying a Buffalo franchise record. This win marked the Sabres’ third straight victory and their fifth in the last seven games.
The match, held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, showcased Buffalo’s offensive strength. Alongside Tucker’s contributions, Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin, and Alex Tuch also found the back of the net. Ryan McLeod and Mattias Samuelsson each recorded two assists, highlighting the team’s collaborative effort.
Lyon’s exceptional play was a focal point of the game. The goalie, who signed with the Sabres in July after two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, secured the sixth shutout of his career. His performance matched the franchise record set by Gerry Desjardins in the 1976-77 season. The Sabres have now improved their record to 18-3-1 over their last 22 games.
The Islanders, who were playing their first home game after a seven-game road trip, struggled to gain momentum. Goaltender Ryan Rittich made 16 saves but fell to an 11-7-3 record this season. Rittich, who last started on January 17 against the Calgary Flames, entered the game with a 4-2-2 record and a 2.46 goals-against average versus Buffalo.
The scoring opened early in the second period when Tucker found the net just 33 seconds in, converting a rebound from a shot by Jack Quinn. Thompson extended the lead to two goals with a shot past a sliding Rittich at 19:47 of the second period. Tucker’s second goal came just 25 seconds into the third period, putting the Sabres ahead 3-0.
Dahlin added to the score with an empty-net goal at 14:02 of the third, while Tuch capped off the scoring approximately 30 seconds later by redirecting a shot from Samuelsson past Rittich.
Bo Horvat returned to the Islanders’ lineup after missing nine games due to a lower-body injury, which provided a much-needed boost to the team.
Looking ahead, the Sabres will face the Toronto Maple Leafs on January 30, 2024, while the Islanders are set to play against the Philadelphia Flyers on January 29, 2024. With their current form, the Sabres are poised to make a strong push in the upcoming games, building on their recent success.
