Minnesota Dream Hunt Transforms Lives for Youth with Disabilities
The 5th annual USSA Minnesota Dream Hunt took place October 17-18, 2023, providing unique hunting experiences for youth with permanent disabilities or life-threatening illnesses. One of the participants, Keagen Gilder, a 16-year-old boy with hemiplegic cerebral palsy, realized his long-held dream of deer hunting thanks to this special initiative.
Sarah Gilder, Keagen’s mother, wanted to keep the surprise of the hunt a secret until the last moment. She handed him a note announcing the adventure, and Keagen’s reaction was priceless. “We’re going deer hunting?! I really get to do this?” Keagen exclaimed, his excitement palpable.
For Keagen, the opportunity to go deer hunting was significant. Although he had expressed interest before, he had never been able to participate due to his condition and the accessibility challenges associated with hunting. Sarah noted that she was unaware of the adaptations available for individuals with disabilities in the hunting community until she discovered the Minnesota Dream Hunt through social media.
Upon arriving at Jack Juberian‘s home in Leonard, located 30 minutes northwest of Bemidji, Keagen felt immediately welcomed. Juberian opened his home to the participants and their families, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie. Keagen quickly connected with Juberian’s children, engaging in friendly games before embarking on their first hunting experience.
The participants received instruction on gun safety and target practice from Juberian and other volunteers. Although Keagen did not catch anything on the first day, he remained undeterred. The following day, he came closer than ever to his goal when he spotted a doe. Juberian, sharing in Keagen’s excitement, guided him through the process of taking aim. With a well-placed shot, Keagen successfully harvested his first deer.
The emotional support provided by Juberian during this moment was profound. “The immediate gratification that Jack showed Keagen is something that most people only give their own children,” Sarah reflected, emphasizing the heartwarming nature of the experience. For Keagen, participating in the hunt not only fulfilled a dream but also helped him gain confidence in social situations, which can often be challenging for him.
The Minnesota Dream Hunt, organized by the United Special Sportsman Alliance (USSA), aims to offer young people with disabilities a chance to engage in outdoor activities, fostering a sense of belonging and achievement. Juberian, who has been a driving force behind the program since its inception in 2021, expressed humility regarding his role. “I wouldn’t call myself the organizer of anything,” he joked, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defines the initiative.
The program has gained momentum over the years, allowing participants like Keagen, Jaydan, Jacob Kungu, and Tyler Ash to enjoy the thrill of the hunt. While Keagen and his friends were able to harvest deer during the event, more importantly, they experienced the joy of outdoor adventure and camaraderie.
Everything related to the hunt, including lodging at a local hotel, is provided at no cost to the families. Juberian stated, “It gives them something different than, say, going to Disneyland or Universal Studios. These kids have been dealt a little different hand than the rest of us.”
The gratitude expressed by families like the Gilders underscores the impact of such initiatives. “The whole event was just humbling,” Sarah Gilder remarked. “It was humbling to see these people open their house and give up their time that they could spend with their families to show others what hunting and the outdoor life can be like.”
The Minnesota Dream Hunt exemplifies how community support can transform lives, providing unforgettable experiences to youth who might otherwise feel excluded. As participants like Keagen continue to chase their dreams, they also pave the way for greater inclusion and accessibility in outdoor activities.
