Michael Strahan Supports Jaxson Dart as Giants’ Future QB

Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan has expressed his belief that Jaxson Dart should be the franchise quarterback for the team moving forward. Strahan, speaking on “FOX NFL Sunday,” advocated for Dart to start as the team’s signal caller in 2026. In making his case, he took a moment to address comments made by former teammate Danny Kanell, who questioned Dart’s readiness for a new contract.

Strahan recalled Kanell’s brief success during his time with the Giants from 1996 to 1998. “One of my old teammates, Danny Kanell, said, ‘I don’t know if Jaxson Dart has proven he’s the quarterback of the future, if he deserves a new contract.’ But Danny played two good games and got a new contract, so relax there, Danny,” Strahan remarked, subtly critiquing Kanell’s assessment.

In a recent segment on CBS Sports HQ, Kanell had shared his concerns regarding Dart’s long-term viability as the starting quarterback. He stated, “I don’t know if Jaxson Dart is the long-term answer for the Giants. When I think of a first-round draft pick, I think of somebody that you should picture for 10 to 12 years as your guy. I still haven’t seen development as a passer.”

Dart, a former standout at Ole Miss, started the season as a backup to Russell Wilson. After the Giants began the season with an 0-3 record, head coach Brian Daboll made the decision to insert Dart into the starting lineup in Week 4. Dart initially showcased his potential, leading the Giants to victories against the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles.

Despite a promising start, Dart faced challenges, including a seven-game winless streak. This stretch coincided with the firing of Daboll, and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was appointed as interim head coach. Throughout the season, Dart dealt with injuries, missing two games due to a concussion and being evaluated for at least five others.

The season concluded on a positive note for Dart and the Giants, as they secured a decisive 34-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18. Over the course of 14 games, with 12 starts, Dart recorded 2,272 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions, completing 63.7% of his passes. Additionally, he rushed for nine touchdowns.

As the Giants head into the offseason, they will hold a top ten pick in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. Given Dart’s performance this past season, it seems unlikely that the organization will look to select another quarterback, even with a potential change in management. Strahan’s endorsement of Dart signals a commitment to developing the young quarterback as the team seeks to build for the future.
