Miami Dolphins Pursue Carlos Polk for Special Teams Coordinator

The Miami Dolphins have initiated discussions to fill their vacant special teams coordinator position, requesting permission to interview Carlos Polk, the current assistant special teams coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. This move comes as the Dolphins look to strengthen their coaching staff under new leadership.

Polk, 48, has a notable background in both playing and coaching. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers, where he played as a linebacker until 2007. After a brief stint with the Cowboys in 2008, Polk transitioned to coaching. His experience includes assistant roles with the Chargers, Cowboys, Jaguars, and Bears, culminating in his current position with Dallas.

In addition to Polk, there are emerging reports of the Dolphins’ interest in Steve Shimko, the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach. Shimko previously served as the offensive coordinator at Boston College when Jeff Hafley was the head coach. His familiarity with Hafley could position him as a contender for the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator role.

According to Todd Archer of ESPN, the Dolphins have reached out regarding Polk’s potential hire, although no confirmation has been made regarding Shimko’s involvement. Archer noted on January 21, 2026, that the team might explore Shimko’s candidacy as they aim to bolster their offensive strategies.

The Dolphins recently appointed Hafley, who is expected to make significant staff changes in the coming weeks. His connection to Brian Angelichio, currently the passing game coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, has also drawn attention. Hafley and Angelichio have collaborated over two decades at various institutions, including the University of Pittsburgh and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As the Dolphins navigate this transition, it remains unclear whether Hafley will retain any members from the previous coaching staff established under Mike McDaniel. The upcoming weeks will likely reveal more about the team’s strategic direction and personnel decisions as they aim to enhance their performance for the upcoming season.
