Giants Extend Non-Roster Invitations for Spring Training

The San Francisco Giants have announced the extension of non-roster invitations to spring training, bringing the total to 19 players. Among them is former All-Star pitcher Michael Fulmer, who could potentially make a significant impact on the team’s bullpen. The reporting day for pitchers and catchers is set for February 11, 2024, in Scottsdale, Arizona, while position players are expected to arrive by February 16. Players participating in the World Baseball Classic, including ace Logan Webb, will report starting on February 12.

Fulmer, now 32 years old, initially gained recognition as a first-round draft pick with the Detroit Tigers. He won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2016 and made the All-Star team the following year. Transitioning to a closer role in 2021, Fulmer saved 14 games. Despite appearing in at least 50 games each year from 2021 to 2023, he missed the entire 2024 season following UCL revision surgery. Last season, he played for four different organizations—the Red Sox, Cubs, Royals, and Mariners—though he only participated in three Major League games. He concluded the season with a strong performance at the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate, posting a 0.75 ERA and striking out 18 batters in 12 innings.

The Giants’ non-roster invitation list also features several players with Major League experience, including left-hander Nick Margevicius and right-handers Gregory Santos and Caleb Kilian.

Notable Prospects Join the Roster

Among the promising prospects included in the invitation list are infielder Parks Harber, outfielder Bo Davidson, and right-handed pitcher Will Bednar. Harber, 24, is particularly notable, having been undrafted out of college. He has made a strong impression, hitting .312 with 14 home runs in 102 minor league games since signing with the Yankees as a free agent after the 2024 draft. Acquired by the Giants last summer in the trade for Camilo Doval, he excelled in the Arizona Fall League, boasting a batting line of .383/.513/.683, which ranked him fourth in the league with an OPS of 1.196.

Davidson, 23, played at both High-A Eugene and Double-A Richmond during his first full season, achieving a combined batting average of .281 with 18 home runs. Although he struck out 119 times in 449 at-bats, he is recognized as one of the organization’s top outfield prospects. Bednar, 25, was a first-round selection in the 2021 draft, but injuries have hindered his progress. He appeared in a career-high 38 games last season, including two at Triple-A Sacramento, with a 4.97 ERA over 50.2 innings pitched.

Additionally, the list includes first baseman Jake Holton, who attended Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose. Holton was drafted in the 10th round by the Tigers in 2019 and hit 19 home runs last season at Double-A. He joined the Giants as a minor league free agent this winter.

The Giants’ commitment to developing a mix of experienced players and promising prospects reflects the organization’s strategy of building a competitive team for the upcoming season. The blend of established talent like Fulmer with emerging players such as Harber and Davidson could provide the Giants with the depth and versatility needed as they prepare for their spring training in Arizona.
