In a significant step for both his athletic career and the Byron High School football program, senior lineman Brevin Brakke has announced his commitment to play college football at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) in Marshall. Brakke, who has been a standout on the field, made the announcement via his X account, sharing his excitement and gratitude towards his family, coaches, and teammates.
Brakke’s decision follows a remarkable high school season where he played a pivotal role in leading the Byron Bears to a 9-1 record and a berth in the Section 1, Class 4A championship game. His performance was instrumental in the team’s defensive strategy, contributing to an impressive average of just 13.2 points allowed per game, ranking as the seventh-best defensive mark among Class 4A teams in the state for the year.
Brakke’s Journey and Recognition
The 6-foot, 290-pound lineman has garnered attention not only for his size and strength but also for his agility and pursuit of the football. His efforts on the defensive line earned him the title of Skyway District Defensive Lineman of the Year, reflecting his status as one of the top players in the region. Ben Halder, head coach of the Byron Bears, commented on Brakke’s contributions, emphasizing his ability to anchor the defensive line and his overall athleticism.
Brakke’s commitment to SMSU marks a continuation of his football journey, where he will reunite with former teammates Ben Steele and Gabe Coshenet. Steele had committed to the Mustangs in mid-July, while Coshenet followed suit in late November. The trio’s shared commitment to SMSU is a testament to their strong bond and successful collaboration on the field.
Future Aspirations
Brakke’s announcement highlights not only his personal achievements but also his aspirations for the future. In his post, he expressed a deep appreciation for the support he has received throughout his journey, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful to my family, coaches, and teammates for their constant support throughout this journey. I can’t wait to get to work and represent SMSU at the next level.” This sentiment reflects the dedication and commitment that has characterized his approach to football and life.
As Brakke prepares for this new chapter, his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes within the Byron community and beyond. His success underscores the importance of hard work, teamwork, and perseverance in achieving one’s goals, both on and off the field.
