Five-star guard Dylan Mingo has postponed his college decision, but the Baylor Bears remain the frontrunners in his recruitment. Initially expected to announce his choice on March 7, 2024, Mingo clarified that his timeline has shifted, stating, “Just got pushed back a bit,” in an interview with ZAGSBLOG. A new announcement date has yet to be set.
The 6-foot-5 combo guard is considering Baylor, Washington, Penn State, and North Carolina. Despite the delay, all projections on 247Sports currently favor Baylor, indicating a strong connection between Mingo and the program.
This connection is rooted in the Bears’ history of developing elite guards. Mingo noted the success of former players like Tounde Yessoufou, Jared Butler, and Davion Mitchell, all of whom have moved on to successful careers. He remarked, “Honestly, just because of their track record with guards… those are all great guards that went there and succeeded and are doing good at the next level.”
The relationship Mingo has built with the Baylor coaching staff also plays a significant role in his decision-making process. He expressed appreciation for their shared values, stating, “They’re strong believers in Christ, which I am as well. And they’re just always so positive and just great people to other people.”
Baylor’s ongoing influence in Mingo’s recruitment is further underscored by his recent conversation with VJ Edgecombe, a former Baylor guard now playing for the Philadelphia 76ers. Mingo mentioned, “He actually called me today… He said, where are you going, bro? I was like, I can’t tell you all that yet.” This dialogue highlights the active NBA pipeline that Baylor maintains.
On the court, Mingo’s performance continues to justify his five-star rating. He averaged 24 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds at the NBPA Top 100 Camp, where he earned MVP honors. His statistics during Nike EYBL play with the PSA Cardinals were equally impressive, with averages of 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.3 steals per game, showcasing his versatility and physical maturity.
As it stands, Baylor has one commitment in the 2026 class, with four-star guard Elijah Williams already on board. Securing Mingo would significantly elevate Baylor’s recruiting class and enhance their national profile.
With strong production, NBA connections, and a cultural fit, Baylor remains well-positioned as Mingo’s decision-making process continues. The combination of athletic excellence and a supportive environment could ultimately lead to a significant addition to the Bears’ roster.
