Arcadia Valley Claims Thanksgiving Tournament Title Over South Iron

Arcadia Valley’s basketball team achieved a significant milestone by defeating South Iron 55-47 in the championship game of the Arcadia Valley Thanksgiving Tournament on November 23, 2023, in Ironton. This victory marked the Tigers’ first title on their home court since 2009, setting the stage for next year’s centennial celebration of the tournament.

The championship match showcased the Tigers’ growth and resilience, particularly in front of a passionate home crowd. Arcadia Valley maintained its lead throughout the game and displayed a strong defensive strategy that kept South Iron’s offense at bay. The victory not only ended South Iron’s seven-year reign as tournament champions but also solidified Arcadia Valley’s position as a formidable contender in local basketball.

Arcadia Valley (3-0) executed a disciplined game plan, particularly in the fourth quarter, where they drew fouls and capitalized on free throws, hitting 15 of 20 attempts. Jarel Jackson led the scoring for the Tigers with 12 points, while Kaiden Keith contributed 10 points and three steals, demonstrating their ability to perform under pressure after a standout semifinal where Keith scored 27 points against West County.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, head coach David Prater noted the importance of learning from previous experiences. “We took a lot of lumps last year. In close games, we just could not get over that hump,” Prater stated. “We talked all summer about finishing games better, and I think it’s starting to pay off.”

South Iron (2-1), under the guidance of future Hall of Fame coach Dusty Dinkins, faced challenges during the game, particularly due to the absence of injured guard Gage Daggett. The Panthers struggled with turnovers, committing 19 during the match, which hindered their offensive rhythm. Senior forward Brady Crum led South Iron with 18 points and six rebounds, but despite his efforts, the team could not close the gap.

The game featured intense moments, including a late surge from South Iron, which narrowed the score to 42-40 with a three-pointer from Cason Chilton. However, a crucial block by Arcadia Valley’s Wyatt Smith helped maintain their lead. As both teams battled for control, the Tigers consistently found ways to score from the free-throw line, securing their advantage in the final minutes.

The atmosphere in the gym was electric, with the student section providing unwavering support throughout the game. “The crowd was electric. That’s why after the game, I ran over to show the student section some love,” Prater remarked. “They did a great job, not just tonight, but all week. It was like a sixth man.”

Throughout the tournament, Arcadia Valley showcased their depth, with players like Brayton Jarvis contributing significantly from the bench, hitting three critical three-pointers. The Tigers demonstrated their shooting prowess by sinking eight three-pointers overall, often at pivotal moments that shifted momentum in their favor.

As Arcadia Valley celebrates this victory, they look ahead to the future with optimism. Their win not only highlights their growth as a team but also sets a new narrative for the upcoming centennial of the Thanksgiving Tournament. The Tigers have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the region, and their journey has only just begun.
