In a groundbreaking development, authorities in Satipo, located in the central Amazon of Peru, have enacted an ordinance that recognizes native stingless bees as legal subjects with inherent rights. This historic law aims to protect these vital pollinators, which are responsible for pollinating approximately 80 percent of native Amazonian plant species, including trees and crops that sustain local wildlife and Indigenous food systems.

Knowledge about nesting trees and seasonal cycles is passed down through generations, intertwining the bees’ existence with the health of the forest. Yet, habitat loss makes these bees increasingly vulnerable. Many species require specific trees for nesting and exist in small, fragmented populations.
