Judith Ernst, Pioneer Educator, Passes Away at 81
Judith Ann Ernst, a respected educator and founder of the Montessori School of Manhattan Beach, passed away unexpectedly on October 4, 2025, at her home in Redondo Beach, California. She was 81 years old. Judith, affectionately known as Judy, was a lifelong resident of the South Bay area, having been born on December 20, 1943, in Manhattan Beach.
A Legacy in Education
Judy graduated from Mira Costa High School in 1961 and later attended UCLA. At just 24 years old, she made a significant mark in the field of education by founding the Montessori School of Manhattan Beach in 1968. Starting with only twelve students, including her three children, Judy established a nurturing environment that emphasized curiosity and kindness. Her dedication to the Montessori method and her pioneering spirit inspired countless families and educators in the community.
Throughout her life, Judy was known for her passion for education and her commitment to fostering a love of learning. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, as she encouraged her students to explore their interests and develop their own unique talents. Those who knew her often remarked on her ability to connect with children and foster a sense of wonder.
Life Beyond Education
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Judy enjoyed a vibrant personal life. She shared many adventures with her husband of 45 years, John Ernst. The couple’s love for the ocean saw them free-diving together, while Judy’s adventurous spirit extended to her fashion choices, where she often showcased her elegant and classic style.
A passionate tennis player, Judy frequently participated in tournaments alongside John and their son Jeff. Her enthusiasm for the sport never waned, and she continued to play well into her later years. Judy’s energy, style, and adventurous nature left a lasting impression on all who met her.
She is survived by her loving husband, John; her children, Jeff, Greg, Lynn, Darlyn, and Leila; and her eleven grandchildren. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Ardith and Herral Jones; her daughter, Nadine; a grandson; and a great-grandson.
Judith Ernst’s life was characterized by her courage, curiosity, and compassion. Her legacy as an educator and a beloved family member will continue to inspire those she touched. A celebration of her life will take place on November 2.
