The Haunted Science Laboratory, a collaborative initiative between the Idaho State University Department of Physics and the Kiwanis Club of Pocatello, will open its doors to the public on October 25, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. This event takes place at the Bannock County Event Center, specifically in Commercial Building B, located just north of the Pocatello Downs Grandstand.

Visitors can expect a blend of education and entertainment, featuring interactive exhibits such as a Van de Graaf generator and lasers. The Haunted Science Laboratory aims to engage children and adults alike with scientific principles presented in a fun and spooky context. Some of the exhibits draw inspiration from Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion, providing explanations for the science behind the thrills.

According to Steve Shropshire, a professor of physics at Idaho State University, “This is a great opportunity to share the wonder of science with your family and have some spooky fun.” He encourages attendees to embrace the Halloween spirit by wearing costumes during their visit.

Admission to the Haunted Science Laboratory is priced at $5 per person or $10 per family, with a limit of six individuals per family, and only cash will be accepted. All proceeds will support Kiwanis-supported charities that benefit children in Southeast Idaho.

For over a decade, the Haunted Science Laboratory has served as a free field trip for local schools prior to its public opening. In 2024, nearly 2,000 local students and adults participated in the field trip, while over 450 visitors attended the lab on its opening day to the public.

For additional information about the event, interested parties may reach out to Jasmyne Jensen, the administrative assistant for the ISU Department of Physics, by calling 208-282-2350 or emailing [email protected]. More details about the department can also be found on their official website at isu.edu/physics.

This engaging event promises to blend education with excitement, making it a perfect outing for families looking to explore the fascinating world of science in a festive atmosphere.
