Cherished Lives of Chuck and Sally Negrete Remembered

Charles Negrete, Jr. and Lydia S. Negrete, known affectionately as Chuck and Sally, passed away just six days apart, leaving behind a legacy of love and community. The couple celebrated their marriage on May 26, 1957, and spent many joyful years together, notably in their West Torrance home, which they settled into in 1962.

Chuck Negrete dedicated much of his professional life to the grocery industry, starting as a produce manager at Thriftimart, which later became known as Smart & Final and Safeway. He inherited his expertise from his father, the esteemed Charles Negrete, Sr.. During his tenure in the 1970s, he became known for his friendly demeanor, even sharing brief conversations with a customer named Chuck Norris. His commitment to customer service earned him the respect of patrons and colleagues alike.

Sally, who was instrumental in holding the family together, created a nurturing home environment. She was not only a devoted mother to their two children, Cyndy Negrete and Rich Negrete (and daughter-in-law Terri), but also a beloved figure in the community. She cherished music, particularly the songs of Johnny Mathis, and made Christmas a magical time filled with memories for her family.

A Life of Community and Cherished Memories

The Negrete residence on Entradero Ave. became a sanctuary for friends and neighbors over the years. Chuck and Sally enjoyed walking through their neighborhood and visiting the nearby Del Amo mall. Halloween was a highlight, as they delighted in handing out candy to trick-or-treaters on their well-travelled street. The sounds of the West High marching band could often be heard from their open front door, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of their home.

As they aged, their leisurely walks transformed into drives to familiar locales, such as the avenues in Redondo Beach and their childhood neighborhoods in Watts. It was during these outings that they reminisced about their youth and reflected on the changes in their community, fostering a sense of nostalgia and connection to their roots.

Chuck had a passion for horse racing, expressing a wish for his ashes to be scattered at the center of the Hollywood Park oval. This request, however, became complicated with the construction of SoFi Stadium nearby, highlighting the shifts in their beloved surroundings.

Legacy of Love and Family

The couple is survived by their three grandchildren: Chipper (and partner Naomi), Blake, and Rory, along with a host of relatives and countless neighbors whom they cherished as extended family. Their strong bond and love for each other were evident throughout their lives, culminating in a remarkable 69 years of marriage.

Chuck and Sally Negrete’s departure marks the end of a beautiful chapter, but their memories will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew them. Their commitment to family, community, and one another serves as a lasting testament to the impact they made in their lifetime.
