Boston University Launches “You Are Why” Campaign to Transform Lives

Boston University (BU) has initiated a new campaign titled “You Are Why,” focusing on the significant contributions of research, science, and the humanities to foster a more engaged and empathetic society. This effort aims to create partnerships that enhance BU’s impact on the lives of individuals in Boston, across the United States, and globally.

Melissa Gilliam, President of Boston University, emphasized the campaign’s objective in a letter to the university community on September 26, 2023. The initiative seeks to connect with supporters of the university’s research activities and engage more closely with elected officials and potential partners who share a commitment to addressing pressing societal challenges.

The campaign highlights various projects, including a bionic pancreas that aids individuals with type 1 diabetes, scholarships for exceptional students from Boston Public Schools, and advancements in treatments for those with Parkinson’s disease. Gilliam stated, “We’re calling this initiative ‘You Are Why’ because fundamentally, the work we do at Boston University is about improving people’s lives.”

Addressing Challenges in Higher Education

In her letter, Gilliam addressed several significant challenges facing higher education. These include rapid technological changes, declining research budgets, and diminishing public trust.
