Beloved Navy Veteran and Engineer James Sheehy Passes Away at 84

James (Jim) Gordon Sheehy, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 84. Surrounded by family in his home in Redondo Beach, California, Jim leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and adventure.

Born on March 9, 1941, in Windsor, New York, Jim was the son of James Edward Sheehy and Shirley Baldwin Sheehy. He was preceded in death by his siblings Terry, Paul, Annine, Brian, Susan, and Burchard. Jim is survived by his wife of sixty years, Alexis Sheehy; his children, James and Shannon; his grandson, Matthew; and his brother, Dennis.

Military Service and Engineering Career

Jim served honorably in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1966, achieving the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician. His service included assignments aboard several ships, such as the USS Lawrence, USS Chicago, USS Ramsey, USS Columbus, and USS Talbot. His time in the Navy fostered a deep sense of discipline and pride in his service.

After his military career, Jim transitioned into a successful role as an aerospace engineer. He contributed significantly to space exploration and national defense, working with notable companies including Burroughs Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Honeywell, and Northrop. Among his distinguished projects were the Viking Mars spacecraft and the MX ICBM Missile programs, where he was recognized for his technical expertise.

A Life of Service and Adventure

Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was a dedicated member of Rotary International for sixteen years, exemplifying a commitment to community service. He also celebrated 38 years of continuous sobriety in September 2025 as an active participant in Alcoholics Anonymous, embodying the principles of Recovery, Unity, and Service.

Jim’s passion for exploration knew no bounds. He traveled extensively with his wife, Alexis, visiting all seven continents, over 103 countries, and more than 500 cities. His adventurous spirit remained undeterred even after developing a serious back condition in 2012. Rather than allow it to limit his experiences, Jim adapted by using a walker and eventually a “sport walker,” which enabled him to complete the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon and participate in five additional marathons.

Jim will be remembered for his intelligence, perseverance, and generosity. He lived a full life enriched by travel, professional accomplishments, and a profound love for his family. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him, as he leaves behind a powerful legacy of service and devotion.
