The race for the Virginia Lieutenant Governor position took an unusual turn on March 5, 2024, when Republican candidate John Reid conducted a debate with an AI version of his opponent. This unconventional move followed Ghazala Hashmi, the Democratic candidate, declining all invitations to participate in a head-to-head debate.

The 40-minute debate aired live on YouTube under the title “The Debate That Should Have Happened.” Reid’s campaign described the event as a fully cited video, crafted to address Hashmi’s publicly stated positions directly. During the debate, a recorded moderator posed questions, to which Reid responded live, while Hashmi’s answers were delivered by a robotic voice mimicking her tone.

Reid framed the initiative as a means to provide voters with a clear comparison of the candidates. “Virginians deserve to see a side-by-side contrast, and since my opponent won’t show up, I had to force the issue myself,” he stated in a press release following the event.

However, the response from the Democratic Party of Virginia was swift and critical. They accused Reid of prioritizing “shoddy gimmicks and dirty tricks” over substantive governance. Ava Pitruzzello, a spokesperson for the Hashmi campaign, labeled the debate a “desperate move,” suggesting that Reid would benefit from focusing on engaging with voters rather than producing videos.

The role of the Lieutenant Governor in Virginia is significant. Serving as both an executive officer and a legislative figure, the Lieutenant Governor acts as the president of the Virginia Senate, casting tie-breaking votes that can influence crucial legislative decisions. Furthermore, this position is first in the line of succession to the governor.

This event marks another instance of artificial intelligence being utilized in political discourse in Virginia. In 2023, an AI bot named “Don Bot” represented Congressman Don Beyer in a debate for Virginia’s 8th District, illustrating a growing trend of integrating technology into political engagements.

As the campaign continues, it remains to be seen how this unique debate will impact voter perceptions and the overall race for Lieutenant Governor in Virginia.
