Summit County Sheriff’s Office Reports on Recent Incidents

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office documented a series of notable incidents from November 24 to November 30, 2023, including illegal Christmas tree cutting, multiple physical altercations at ski resorts, and traffic violations involving false identification.

Traffic Violations and Arrests

On November 26, a deputy initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle without a front license plate. The driver provided a false identity and claimed he did not possess a driver’s license. Using a fingerprint reader, the deputy confirmed the man’s identity and discovered two outstanding warrants for his arrest related to previous charges of driving under the influence. He also had a revoked driver’s license and was cited for illegal window tinting. The deputy arrested the individual, and he was subsequently taken to the county jail.

Another incident on November 28 involved a driver who, during a routine traffic stop for lacking a front license plate, presented a fake name and date of birth. After investigation, the deputy identified the man, who had been classified as a “habitual traffic offender” with a revoked license. He was arrested and taken into custody without incident.

Fraudulent Activity and Assault Reports

On November 27, a resident in unincorporated Breckenridge reported a fraudulent call from someone posing as a Verizon representative. Following the call, the victim’s phone service was transferred to another carrier without her consent, and attempts were made to access her financial accounts. Fortunately, the banks intervened and blocked unauthorized transactions. The suspect successfully opened a credit card in the victim’s name, but she managed to dispute the charge promptly.

Additionally, on November 26, a flower delivery person was bitten by a dog while delivering to a home in Summit County. After entering the property unaware of the dog’s presence, the delivery person required medical attention. Animal control placed the dog under a ten-day rabies observation quarantine and confirmed its vaccinations were current, while the dog owner received a citation.

Two physical altercations at prominent ski resorts were reported on November 27 and November 30. One occurred at Copper Mountain, where two spectators had a disagreement during the Copper Cup. The other incident took place at Keystone Resort, involving a skier and a snowboarder who clashed over riding safety.

On November 30, deputies received a report of an intoxicated man behaving disruptively at a café in Copper Mountain. Although he left the premises before deputies arrived, he was later located at another bar. While visibly intoxicated, he had not committed any offenses warranting charges. At the request of bar security, deputies issued him a verbal trespass warning for Copper Mountain property.

These incidents highlight ongoing challenges related to safety and security within Summit County, as well as the efforts of law enforcement to address them effectively.
