Santos Defends Clemency and Compares Himself to Jesus in CNN Interview
Former Congressman George Santos defended President Donald Trump‘s decision to grant him clemency during an interview with CNN on July 9, 2023. Santos, who was sentenced to over seven years in prison for wire fraud, had his sentence commuted by Trump earlier this week. In the interview with Dana Bash on “State of the Union,” Santos responded to questions regarding whether he received “favorable treatment” due to his loyalty to the president.
Santos dismissed concerns about perceived preferential treatment, stating, “Pardon me if I’m not paying too much attention to the pearl-clutching of the outrage of my critics and of the people, predominantly on the left.” He emphasized that the powers of pardon and clemency are granted to presidents and are exercised at their discretion.
Controversial Comparisons
During the interview, Santos made headlines by comparing himself to Jesus Christ, asserting that critics of Trump would find fault in any decision made by the president. “People are going to like me. People are gonna hate me. It doesn’t matter whoever gets clemency in the future, or whoever that person might be,” he said. “I’m pretty confident if President Trump had pardoned Jesus Christ off the cross, he would have had critics. So that’s just the reality of our country.”
This is not the first time Santos has invoked religious imagery in relation to his clemency. Following his release, he took to social media to express gratitude, stating, “Yesterday, I was given something I never thought I’d have again: a true second chance at life.” He thanked Jesus Christ for his faith, adding, “I’m far from perfect. I’ve made mistakes, I’ve stumbled, but I never lost faith in Him. His grace carried me when I couldn’t carry myself, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”
Media Engagement
Bash, maintaining a professional demeanor, chose not to engage with Santos’ comparison directly, instead shifting the conversation. Her decision reflects the complex dynamics of interviewing controversial figures, especially those who evoke polarizing imagery.
Santos’ remarks have sparked widespread discussion, particularly regarding the appropriateness of his comparisons and the implications of his clemency. Critics argue that his statements trivialize significant religious narratives, while supporters see his comments as a reflection of his resilience in the face of adversity.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Santos remains a figure of intrigue, embodying the challenges and controversies that accompany political clemency and public perception in the United States.
