Graham Platner Addresses Controversial Tattoo and Past Reddit Posts
Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is confronting backlash over past comments made on Reddit and a tattoo that some have linked to Nazi symbolism. During a recent interview, Platner acknowledged that his previous posts were fueled by anger and insensitivity and reaffirmed his commitment to personal growth.
In a video response, Platner explained that he had shared controversial views, including a post questioning why Black people do not tip and another suggesting that sexual assault victims should “take some responsibility for themselves.” He expressed regret for those comments, stating, “Of course, I find that offensive… I made that comment in 2013. I had just come out of the infantry, which was, at the time, all male.” Platner noted that his perspective shifted significantly after he befriended female veterans who shared their experiences with sexual assault in the military.
The candidate also addressed the skull and crossbones tattoo on his chest, which has drawn comparisons to the Totenkopf symbol associated with Nazi uniforms. Platner clarified that he got the tattoo in 2007 while serving as a young Marine in Croatia. “I never once thought about it in that context. And the moment it was pointed out to me, I have gotten it covered up,” he said, emphasizing his strong stance against antisemitism and Nazism.
Despite the controversies, Platner remains focused on his campaign goals. He stated, “I fully expect them to throw everything at us continually. I expect people to lie.” He believes that the negative attention is part of a larger strategy by political opponents to undermine his candidacy.
During the interview, Platner expressed confidence in his fundraising efforts and support from campaign volunteers, stating, “They know that this is all nonsense. It is no surprise that these stories dropped within days of DC’s chosen candidate getting into this race.” He framed the scrutiny as an intentional distraction from pressing issues affecting Mainers.
One of his challengers within the Democratic primary, Jordan Wood, has called for Platner to withdraw from the race, labeling his comments and tattoo as disqualifying. “Graham Platner’s Reddit comments and Nazi SS Totenkopf tattoo are not who we are as Mainers or as Democrats,” Wood asserted.
In response to the situation, fellow candidate Bernie Sanders expressed his support for Platner, highlighting the need to focus on critical issues such as the healthcare system rather than personal controversies. “We are dealing with a collapsing healthcare system… and you’re asking me about whether or not a guy should get a tattoo removed?” Sanders remarked.
As the campaign progresses, Platner insists that he will not be deterred by the scrutiny, stating, “This is the political establishment trying to fight back. And they are going to fail.” His dedication to addressing the real concerns of constituents remains a focal point of his message as he continues his Senate bid in Maine.
