Genesee County Sheriff’s Office Waives PPO Fees for Struggling Victims
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office has announced a pivotal change aimed at assisting domestic violence victims by waiving service fees for personal protection orders (PPOs). This initiative, introduced by Sheriff Chris Swanson, is now in effect and seeks to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent individuals from obtaining crucial legal protection.
According to CBS News Detroit, victims who cannot afford the service fees for PPOs can now receive assistance directly from the Sheriff’s Office. “The cost to have a PPO served should never be a barrier to keeping a person safe from a domestic situation,” Sheriff Swanson stated. This decision comes as a proactive measure, circumventing ongoing legislative efforts that aim to eliminate such fees on a statewide basis, which can often take considerable time to enact.
In his announcement, Sheriff Swanson emphasized, “Effective immediately, if you have a PPO that’s been authorized by the court and you do not have the financial means to pay for that service, you just can’t afford it, do not let that stop you.” Individuals seeking to utilize this service can visit the Sheriff’s Office located on South Saginaw Street, where they can speak with a deputy or detective who will assist in serving the order.
Expanded Support for Domestic Violence Victims
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to support domestic violence survivors. The recently signed state budget by Governor Gretchen Whitmer includes a substantial allocation of $162.3 million for crime victim services, which encompasses funding for domestic violence prevention and support for survivors. Sheriff Swanson’s proactive approach not only addresses immediate community needs but also sets a potential precedent for reform across the state.
In a video shared on social media, Sheriff Swanson assured victims, “We will protect you and we won’t let finances be a barrier.” This commitment highlights the Sheriff’s Office’s dedication to ensuring that all individuals have access to the protection they need without the burden of financial hardship.
For those interested in acquiring a PPO in Genesee County, inquiries can be directed to the personal protection order office. In emergency situations, individuals are strongly encouraged to call 911 or contact the YWCA crisis line, which is available 24/7 to provide immediate support and assistance to domestic violence victims.
The steps taken by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office represent a significant shift in addressing domestic violence and highlight the importance of accessible support systems for those in need.
