Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) will reopen on January 29, 2024, following a three-day closure prompted by a severe winter storm. The district confirmed that school operations, including yellow bus services, will resume on a regular schedule, although minor delays may occur due to icy conditions on some residential streets.
As students prepare to return, CPS is urging local residents to help ensure their safety by clearing sidewalks and areas near bus stops. According to Superintendent Shauna Murphy, community cooperation is essential to facilitate safe commutes for the district’s more than 35,000 students. “We are eager to welcome our students back, and we need the community’s help to make their commute safer,” Murphy stated. “Please, if you are able, clear sidewalks and salt icy patches today and show the whole region that our community is Here For Kids.”
Residents are advised to allow extra travel time and dress appropriately for the harsh weather conditions. The WCPO 9 First Warning Weather Team forecasts temperatures to drop below freezing, with wind chills potentially reaching between -5 and -15 degrees Celsius in some areas.
While CPS is set to reopen, the district noted that several other local schools, churches, and organizations may still experience closures or delays. Community members can find a comprehensive list of these disruptions on local news websites.
In light of the winter weather, CPS remains committed to prioritizing student safety and is optimistic about resuming educational activities. With community support, the district aims to create a secure environment for all returning students.
