The Berlin Town Council convened on January 19, 2026, to address key community issues, including the installation of a Flock Safety camera and plans for the local farmers market. The meeting featured a presentation by Cullman County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Cheryl Hawkins, who clarified the purpose and functionality of the camera located near Welcome Mini Storage at 5945 County Road 747.
Councilman Keith Hardman raised concerns regarding data privacy, suggesting that such cameras might allow for the sale of collected data. Deputy Hawkins assured the council that this was not the case, emphasizing that the camera operates only as a tool for law enforcement. “If a vehicle’s license plate is linked to criminal activities, such as human trafficking or theft, the camera can alert authorities,” she explained. According to information from the Flock Safety website, these cameras utilize automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) that capture images of vehicles on public roads. Any footage not related to an investigation is promptly deleted, and users retain full ownership of their data.
The council discussed the broader implications of this technology, emphasizing the importance of community safety while addressing privacy concerns.
In addition to the camera installation, Mayor Patrick Bates presented updates on the annual report for the Rebuild Alabama program. He proposed a budget modification to merge expenses for the farmers market parking lot with those allocated for road repairs. The council debated whether these expenses should be separated into distinct bids but ultimately decided to keep them combined. Bates noted the necessity of consulting with an engineer to ensure this approach complies with regulations.
Town Clerk Keirstyn Montgomery sought approval for a new plaque for the farmers market, measuring 16 by 24 inches and costing $2,349.50. The council approved the motion, with Hardman proposing and Councilman Donald Gunter seconding.
The council is also in search of a lawn care company to manage maintenance tasks, including mowing and bush hogging. Montgomery indicated that bids could be submitted as a package or by individual line items. Interested parties are encouraged to contact her at 256-736-3138 or via email at [email protected].
The next Berlin Town Council meeting is scheduled for February 16, 2026, at 19:00 at Berlin Town Hall. The community is invited to participate and stay informed about ongoing developments.
