Alex Kalkhofer has been elected to the Longmont City Council’s Ward 3 seat by acclamation, leading to the cancellation of a special election originally scheduled for March 3, 2024. Under Colorado law, a special election is not required when only one candidate files for a position. Since Kalkhofer was the sole candidate to submit the necessary paperwork for the vacancy, he was declared elected without a contested vote.
Kalkhofer will fill the remainder of the term left vacant by Susie Hidalgo-Fahring, who was elected mayor in November 2023. His term will last until December 7, 2027. He is set to be sworn in during the City Council meeting on January 13, 2024, and will have the opportunity to run for a full four-year term in December 2027.
In a statement released by the city, Mayor Hidalgo-Fahring expressed her enthusiasm for Kalkhofer’s election. “We are pleased to have a candidate step forward to serve Ward 3,” she said. “Alex’s commitment to representing our community will be valuable as we move forward with our city’s priorities.”
Kalkhofer previously expressed his intention to run in the special election to fill the open seat. He has been actively involved in Longmont’s governance, having run in the at-large City Council race last fall, where he secured 14.6% of the vote, finishing behind newly elected Councilmember Crystal Prieto. A resident of Ward 3 since 2008, Kalkhofer currently serves as the chair of the city’s Transportation Advisory Board.
Upon his election, Kalkhofer conveyed his gratitude to the residents of Ward 3. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this incredible moment!” he posted on his campaign page. “It’s your trust and your belief that made it possible.” He also committed to addressing key community issues, stating, “I commit to listening intently, tackling housing affordability, safer streets, and local business growth with the same energy. We did this together!”
