The FIFA Puskas Award has recognized Lamine Yamal, nominating the young Barcelona player for the best men’s goal of the previous season. This announcement was made on Thursday, highlighting Yamal’s impressive strike against Espanyol in May. The goal featured a signature curling left-foot shot after he skillfully maneuvered across the defense from the right flank.
Alongside Yamal, Brazilian football legend Marta has also earned a nomination, this time for the FIFA Marta Award, which honors the best women’s goal and is named in her honor. Marta’s nomination stems from a stunning play while representing the Orlando Pride against the Kansas City Current, where she dribbled past two defenders before rounding the goalkeeper to score into an open net.
Voting and Additional Nominees
FIFA has selected a total of 11 nominees for both the Puskas Award and the Marta Award. Fans will have the opportunity to cast their votes online, alongside a panel of former international players. Voting will remain open until December 3, 2025.
The awards ceremony is expected to take place shortly after the voting deadline, though it remains uncertain if FIFA will present the winners during the men’s World Cup tournament draw in Washington D.C., which will be attended by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Other notable nominees for the men’s Puskas Award include Declan Rice of Arsenal, recognized for a remarkable free kick against Real Madrid during the Champions League quarterfinals, and Lucas Ribeiro, who scored a solo goal for Mamelodi Sundowns against Borussia Dortmund at the Club World Cup.
In the women’s category, Ally Sentnor has been nominated for her swerving shot for the United States against Colombia during the SheBelieves Cup. Additionally, Vivianne Miedema is in contention for her floated shot for the Netherlands against Wales at the Women’s European Championship.
The Puskas Award, awarded annually by FIFA since 2009, celebrates the most aesthetically significant and beautiful goals scored in football. This year’s nominations reflect a blend of emerging talent and established stars, showcasing the best of both men’s and women’s football.
