Texas Home Transforms with English Country Charm

A sprawling residence near Houston has undergone a remarkable transformation, merging Texan spaciousness with the inviting charm of the English countryside. Designer Meg Lonergan spearheaded the project, inspired by the warmth and intimate atmosphere characteristic of traditional English homes. Her client, Brook Novelli, known for her extensive knowledge of interiors, sought to create a retreat for her family rather than downsize after raising three daughters.

The house, extending across 8,000 square feet, required a thoughtful approach to redesign. Rather than moving to a smaller property, Brook and her husband, Mike, envisioned an environment that would accommodate their growing family. Brook’s request was clear: adapt the house to better fit their needs as grandparents.

Design Concept and Collaboration

Brook’s background in design, influenced by her mother who was also an interior designer, played a crucial role in the project. She was involved in the selection process for the designer, interviewing many candidates before choosing Lonergan for her layered and soulful approach. “Our client’s mother had been an interior designer herself; she was raised around antiques and pattern,” Meg explained. This deep-seated appreciation for design set a high standard for the project.

The initial focus of the redesign was a bunk room for Brook’s grandsons, creatively carved out of the attic space. Meg recognized Brook’s clarity of vision and family-oriented priorities, which became the project’s foundation.

In addition to interior design, architect Matthew Mitchell contributed significantly by redefining the home’s open-plan layout. “Matthew was instrumental in helping to establish a few interior architectural details, such as the columns, to help these sprawling spaces become more defined,” Meg noted. The kitchen also saw a significant redesign, with its orientation changed to foster a more sociable atmosphere, allowing for larger gatherings.

Thoughtful Interiors and Family Focus

As the project unfolded, the scope of work evolved. Meg humorously referred to this as “scope-creep,” highlighting that Brook’s assured nature made it challenging to suggest changes. One such change involved transforming the old playroom into a library, which unexpectedly became Brook’s favorite space. Meg’s suggestion to renovate the main bathroom also proved successful, elevating it from a dated style to a luxurious retreat.

The design palette was inspired by the home’s natural surroundings, utilizing earthy greens and browns with vibrant accents. Meg expertly blended the essence of English interior style with Texan aesthetics, creating a harmonious environment where traditional and modern elements coexist.

In the dining room, hand-printed wallpaper by de Gournay envelops the walls, while a locally sourced dining table complements Brook’s antique buffet. Meg emphasized the importance of incorporating many of Brook’s existing pieces, stating, “Why fix what’s not broken is my motto.” This approach not only respects the environment but also adds personal significance to the design.

The finished project reflects a successful collaboration between client and designer, resulting in a home that feels both at ease in Texas and capable of hosting a traditional English afternoon tea. The transformation of this Texas home stands as a testament to the blending of cultures and the power of thoughtful design.
