Support Local Businesses This Holiday Season Amid Challenges

The holiday shopping season is officially underway, and many are urging consumers to support local businesses during this critical time. Small Business Saturday has catalyzed a wave of in-store promotions across various independent shops, including Creature’s Plants & Coffee in Eagle Rock, which is known for its diverse selection of plants and holiday gifts. Owner Hope Creature emphasizes the store’s role as a community hub, stating it is a place where locals can “explore, learn and connect.”

Challenges abound for small retailers this year, as economic uncertainties, tariffs, and recent local crises have created a cautious atmosphere for both business owners and consumers. Sonya Gallardo, who runs Highlow Gift Shop in Torrance, expressed her concerns about the impact of tariffs on her inventory decisions, saying, “I waited a long time to place my orders due to all the tariff uncertainty.” Such worries are reflected in customer behavior, as many are opting to hold back on purchases.

At Miracle Mile Toys & Gifts on La Brea Avenue, owner Christina Mullin noted the struggle for foot traffic, admitting she was the only customer during a recent visit. “I’m happy for the street traffic from République,” she said, hoping the holiday season will provide the necessary boost in sales.

In contrast, Jasa Cocke, owner of Marz in South Pasadena, reported steadier business, attributing her success to a loyal customer base and engaging pop-up events that attract shoppers. “We have really nice repeat customers,” she shared, reinforcing the importance of community connection in retail.

Despite a slow sales trend since September, Jill Pearson of Hömage in Pasadena remains optimistic about local shopping. “It’s hard to resist spreading joy,” she remarked, highlighting the emotional aspect of gift-giving.

The importance of in-person shopping extends beyond mere transactions. Last December, a winter market at Plant Material in Altadena showcased local artists and artisans, but many of those vendors faced severe hardships after the Eaton fire devastated the area. The community rallied to support those affected, illustrating the profound impact of local businesses on community resilience.

Shopping locally not only fosters community ties but also provides a more enjoyable experience compared to the often overwhelming atmosphere of large shopping malls. Many find it rewarding to explore neighborhoods like Mission Street in South Pasadena, Glendale Boulevard in Atwater Village, and Larchmont Boulevard in Larchmont Village, where independent shops offer unique gifts and a personal touch.

As the holiday season progresses, consumers are encouraged to keep the momentum going by supporting local businesses. For additional recommendations on gift shops and events in the area, the L.A. Times Holiday Gift Guide offers a comprehensive overview.

In these challenging times, shopping locally can make a significant difference in sustaining small businesses and enriching community life.
