In response to the federal government shutdown affecting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the city of Shaker Heights has initiated a program to match local donations to the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland. The city will match contributions dollar for dollar, up to a total of $10,000, to provide essential support for those in need. This initiative, part of the “Shaker Shares: Neighbors Helping Neighbors” campaign, will remain in effect until November 30, 2023.
Local officials announced the matching donation offer on Friday, highlighting the importance of community support as federal food benefits face uncertainty. Donations can be made through the Hunger Network’s website, aimed at assisting the Shaker Heights Community Hunger Center in meeting the rising demand for food assistance. Mayor David Weiss emphasized the community’s spirit, stating, “In true Shaker spirit, many residents have asked what they can do to assist those who rely on federal food benefits.”
The Shaker Heights Community Hunger Center has seen a significant increase in demand recently. From January to September of this year, the center served an average of 84 households per month. In contrast, the month of October alone saw an increase, with 133 households served. As Thanksgiving approaches, additional food distribution events are scheduled for November 17, 19, 24, and 26.
Resources for Those Facing Food Insecurity
In addition to matching donations, the city has compiled a list of resources for individuals facing food insecurity. These options aim to provide immediate assistance to residents impacted by the suspension of federal food benefits.
Resources include:
– **United Way 211**: Available 24 hours a day, this service offers free and confidential referrals to nearly 1,700 agencies. Residents can access it by calling 211.
– **Greater Cleveland Food Bank**: An interactive map is available for locating nearby food distribution sites. For assistance, individuals can visit their website or call (216) 738-2067.
– **Little Free Food Pantries**: Accessible 24/7, these outdoor pantry boxes are located at various sites, including Christ Episcopal Church and East View UCC.
– **South Pointe Hospital**: Offers a food pantry on weekdays by appointment, with walk-in hours on Thursdays from 13:00 to 15:00.
– **Our Lady of Peace Church**: Distributes pre-packed food bags on Mondays from 10:00 to 13:00 at their office.
The city plans to update this resource list as new options become available, ensuring residents have access to the support they need during this challenging time. Mayor Weiss urged those who are able to contribute, stating, “This effort can make a real difference. I urge Shaker residents to make a donation to the Hunger Network to help our neighbors during this difficult time.”
As Shaker Heights rallies to support its community, the initiative demonstrates a concerted effort to alleviate hunger and foster resilience in the face of federal program uncertainties.
