Remembering Dorothy Bench: A Life Dedicated to Education and Community

Dorothy Jean Bench, a beloved educator and community member, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on March 7, 1928, in Creston, Iowa, to James Milton Johnson and Edna Theresa Furlong, Dorothy’s life was marked by a deep commitment to education, music, and community service.

In 1936, her family relocated to Beaumont, California, where her father found new employment. Dorothy graduated from Montebello High School and was part of the inaugural class at Pepperdine College in Los Angeles. She later spent her third year at Whittier College, enhancing her educational pursuits.

In 1950, she married Newell Lamont Bench. The couple moved to Berkeley, California, in 1954, where Dorothy began her career as a secretary in the office of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. While working, she obtained a secondary teaching degree with a focus on music education. Over the next 22 years, she taught at Richmond and Pinole High Schools, influencing countless students.

After her husband’s passing, Dorothy moved to Vacaville, where she became actively involved in several local organizations. Her contributions included participation in the Vaca Valley Garden Club, the Saturday Club, and the Vacaville Museum. She also served on the board of the Solano Symphony and was a longstanding member of SAMANTICS, a choral group that performed across Vacaville, Sacramento, and Berkeley.

Dorothy’s faith was an integral part of her life. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January 1951 and remained a devoted member throughout her life.

At her request, no services will be held following her passing. She will be interred alongside her husband at the Vacaville Elmira Cemetery. In honor of her memory, friends and family are encouraged to plant a living memorial.
