Neddy Latimer Celebrated as Namesake of New Shelter in Leominster
LEOMINSTER – The community gathered on October 16, 2023, to honor Neddy Latimer, the long-serving Executive Director of the Spanish American Center, during a naming ceremony for a new shelter now bearing her name. The Neddy Latimer House aims to provide support and a fresh start for individuals and families in need.
The atmosphere at the ceremony was vibrant, with many attendees expressing their admiration for Latimer’s lifelong commitment to community service. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, emphasized the shelter’s significance. “This is not just a building. It is a beacon of hope,” he stated, highlighting Latimer’s dedication to assisting those facing hardships.
Bushman recalled the inspiration behind the shelter, noting Latimer’s insistence on the necessity for such a facility. “Neddy said we have to do this, there are children and families in need,” he remarked. The project, which involved over $3 million in investments from various organizations, was a collaborative effort that included the Spanish American Center and the United Way.
The event featured speeches from various community leaders, with Mayor Dean Mazzarella expressing gratitude for Latimer’s contributions over nearly four decades. “Neddy is really the story of us,” he said, reinforcing her impact on the community. Mazzarella humorously remarked on the difficulty of saying no to Latimer, especially regarding crucial funding for projects like the shelter.
In addition to Mazzarella, Kory Eng, President and CEO of the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, praised Latimer’s leadership. He noted that the Spanish American Center frequently leads initiatives to support the vulnerable, stating, “This program is about people regaining their dignity. That’s what Neddy represents.”
Community Leaders Celebrate Latimer’s Legacy
The ceremony also featured heartfelt acknowledgments from board members of both the Fitchburg Housing Authority and Opportunities for Hope. Thomas Hughes, Chair of both organizations, described the event as “a celebration and a declaration of gratitude.” He stressed that the shelter stands as a symbol of compassion and community, directly connected to Latimer’s influence.
Latimer’s husband, Jose Latimer, attended the event, visibly moved by the honor bestowed upon his wife. As the unveiling of the shelter’s sign occurred, emotions ran high, culminating in a standing ovation for Latimer. “I am humbled and honored,” she expressed, visibly touched by the support from her community.
The ceremony concluded with a toast led by Bushman, celebrating both Latimer and Ada Alvarado, Director of Operations at Opportunities for Hope. Attendees enjoyed refreshments while exploring the shelter, which is designed to be a welcoming and homey environment, complete with a sign proclaiming, “Welcome, we’re glad you’re here.”
In his closing remarks, Father Julio Granados from the Holy Family of Nazareth Church in Leominster offered a benediction, emphasizing the importance of kindness and hope. “There is goodness in every one of us, and Neddy has taught us that,” he said, wishing for the shelter to serve as a place of peace and renewed hope for all who enter.
The Neddy Latimer House is not just a shelter; it represents a legacy of compassion and community service that Latimer has embodied throughout her career. As the shelter opens its doors, it stands ready to make a significant impact on the lives of those who seek assistance.
