Milligan University Students Earn Prestigious Physician Assistant Awards

A current student and an alumnus of Milligan University’s Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPAS) program have received significant recognition from the Tennessee Academy of Physician Assistants (TAPA). Paxton Barnes was honored with TAPA’s Student of the Year Award, while Bailey Jessee, a graduate from the class of 2021, received the Preceptor of the Year Award. Both awards were presented at the 2025 TAPA Fall Conference held earlier this month.

Acknowledgment of Excellence in the PA Community

As a preceptor, Jessee plays a vital role in supervising, teaching, and evaluating PA students within clinical settings. He is also actively involved as a member of the PA Program Advisory Committee and serves as an adjunct instructor for Milligan’s PA program. Dr. Andy Hull, area chair and director of physician assistant studies at Milligan, emphasized Jessee’s commitment to the profession, stating, “Bailey’s dedication to precepting and mentoring future PAs is highlighted by this award. He exemplifies clinical excellence while investing in the next generation of PAs, encouraging growth and confidence in our students.”

Barnes, who is set to graduate in spring 2025, holds the position of AAPA State Chapter Student Representative for Milligan’s PA program. Her involvement extends beyond academics; she has also taken part in a short-term medical mission trip to Kenya. Dr. Hull praised Barnes for her qualities, saying, “Paxton truly embodies what it means to be a Milligan PA student through her compassion, professionalism, and commitment to serving others. This award honors her academic excellence, servant leadership, and dedication to providing excellent patient care.”

Impact on the Community and Future of Healthcare

These awards reflect the mission of Milligan University’s PA program, which aims to equip students to make a positive impact both locally and globally through exceptional care. The recognition of Barnes and Jessee underscores the importance of mentorship and community service in the development of future healthcare professionals. Their achievements serve as an inspiration for current and prospective students, illustrating how dedication and hard work can lead to significant contributions in the field of medicine.

As healthcare continues to evolve, the commitment demonstrated by both Barnes and Jessee highlights the essential role of physician assistants in delivering high-quality patient care and supporting the next generation of healthcare leaders.
