Madison County Lights Up for Veterans with Operation Green Light
Madison County, New York, is set to honor military veterans by illuminating the Madison County Courthouse in green from November 4 to November 11, 2023. This initiative, part of the nationwide Operation Green Light, aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by veterans and highlight available support resources.
Operation Green Light is a collaborative effort led by the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) alongside the National Association of Counties (NACo). First launched in 2021, the campaign has gained national traction since its adoption by NACo in 2022. The initiative encourages communities to show their support for veterans by changing a light to green, a symbol of appreciation and solidarity.
According to James J. Cunningham, Chairman of the Madison County Board, “Operation Green Light is just one small way we can show our veterans how much we appreciate the sacrifices they made for our safety and security.” Cunningham emphasizes that this campaign serves as a reminder to veterans that their service is recognized and valued.
In addition to the courthouse lighting, Madison County is encouraging local municipalities, businesses, and residents to participate. Individuals can change one exterior or interior light to green, fostering conversations about veteran support within their communities. Residents are also encouraged to reach out to veterans, offering assistance like transportation to appointments or simply engaging in conversation.
By illuminating their homes and businesses, community members send a clear message: veterans are seen, appreciated, and supported. Although the main event takes place during the week leading up to Veterans Day, participants are encouraged to maintain this visibility year-round. Social media users can share their participation using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.
The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from local leaders. Ron Raymer, Director of the Madison County Veterans Service Agency and a veteran himself, stated, “Operation Green Light is a great initiative and opportunity to send a strong and highly visible message to both the veteran community and active-duty service members alike who may call Madison County home.” He added that the campaign conveys a commitment to support veterans and provides access to resources designed to assist them in their transition.
For veterans or those who know veterans in need of assistance, the Madison County Veterans Service Agency is available at (315) 366-2395 or through their website at www.madisoncounty.ny.gov. The agency provides connections to federal, state, and local benefits and services.

As Veterans Day approaches, Madison County’s initiative serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by service members and the importance of community support in their lives.
