Lorain Library Announces 2026 Toni Morrison Poetry Contest

The Lorain Public Library System is set to host its annual Toni Morrison Poetry Contest for 2026, inviting students and adult residents of Lorain County to showcase their creativity. From February 19 to March 26, participants can submit one original poem, contributing to a celebration of literary talent inspired by the esteemed author Toni Morrison.

Students in grades six through 12 and adults may send their submissions via email to [email protected]. It is important to include personal details such as the legal name, any pen name, school name and grade if applicable, as well as a home address, phone number, and email address. Poets can express themselves through free or formal verse, with poems limited to a maximum of 40 lines. All submissions must be formatted in 12-point Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri font and double-spaced.

The contest offers a competitive edge with prizes awarded in three categories: $75 for grades six through eight, $50 for grades nine through 12, and $25 for adult submissions. This initiative not only encourages budding writers but also honors the legacy of Toni Morrison, a Nobel Prize-winning author renowned for her impactful storytelling.

To celebrate the contest, the Lorain Public Library System will host an Open Mic Poetry event on April 28, 2026, from 18:00 to 19:30 at the North Ridgeville Branch. This event will provide a platform for all entrants to share their work in a supportive atmosphere, fostering a sense of community among poets and poetry enthusiasts.
