Gwendolyn E. Becker, Beloved Educator, Passes at 90

Gwendolyn E. Becker, a cherished resident of Elmhurst, Illinois, and a dedicated educator, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, at the age of 90. Her life was marked by a blend of creativity, adventure, and a deep commitment to teaching, leaving a lasting impact on her community.

Born on July 21, 1935, Gwendolyn was known for her artistic flair, particularly in knitting and crafting. Each year, she delighted family and friends with unique Christmas cards, showcasing her creativity. Her adventurous spirit shone through her love for skiing, which led her to meet her beloved husband, Richard Becker, at the Oak Park Ski Club. Together, they became longtime members of the Skunk Hollow Ski Club and enjoyed 49 wonderful years of marriage until Richard’s passing in 2021.

Legacy of Education and Family

Gwendolyn dedicated a significant portion of her life to education, primarily teaching third grade at Roosevelt and Washington Schools in Elmhurst. After raising her own children, she returned to the classroom as a part-time special education teacher. Her passion for teaching continued to resonate through the lives of her students and their families, reflecting her commitment to nurturing young minds.

She is remembered as the devoted mother of Melenie Becker and Eric Becker (Jamie Becker), and as a proud grandmother to Eli and Emmet. Gwendolyn also cherished her role as a sister to Harley Collins (Ruth) and as the beloved daughter of the late Charles and Edit Collins (nee Borgersen).

Final Arrangements and Tributes

An evening visitation will be held from 16:00 to 20:00 on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, located at 567 S. Spring Road, Elmhurst, Illinois. A morning visitation will follow on Monday, March 2, 2026, from 09:30 to 10:30 at Epiphany Lutheran Church, situated at 314 W. Vallette Street, Elmhurst. The funeral service will commence at 10:30 at the church, with interment to follow at Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst.
