The East Side of San Antonio witnessed a vibrant display of community spirit on January 13, 2024, as the inaugural “Freedom Bike” event attracted over 100 riders. This fundraising race took place in conjunction with activities leading up to the annual Martin Luther King Jr. March, emphasizing safety and empowerment within the cycling community.
Organized by Black Girls Do Bike: San Antonio in partnership with the Ghisallo Cycling Initiative, participants could choose from four routes of varying lengths: four, eight, and 15 miles. A shorter, less-than-half-mile Freedom Loop allowed riders to experience the scenic Martin Luther King Park, promoting inclusivity for all skill levels.
Cristina Solorzano, a member of Ghisallo, expressed her enthusiasm for the turnout, stating, “What brought me out here was the community. Having people come out on a really cold morning and just showing up and being here is awesome.”
The event not only encouraged cycling but also offered free lessons for both children and adults, focusing on essential safety skills and road awareness. Alexis Rodriguez, a program coordinator with Ghisallo, highlighted the importance of education in empowering cyclists. “Cyclists have rights to be on the road; they are road users just like vehicles, so they have rules to follow as well,” she noted.
Rodriguez emphasized that the event placed a strong focus on helmet fit and overall safety, vital for novice riders. “Hosting a free event on the East Side helps remove barriers and builds confidence for new riders,” she added. The engaging atmosphere fostered a sense of community, allowing participants to connect while enjoying the outdoors.
These events serve not only to promote physical activity but also to cultivate an inclusive environment. Rodriguez stated, “These are really fun events. You visit stations, you gain community riding with other people, and you feel a sense of empowerment being out there in nature.”
The Freedom Bike event was part of a series of activities leading up to the 39th annual MLK March scheduled for January 15, 2024. For those planning to attend the march, additional information about the route, weather conditions, and other details can be found on official event pages.
This inaugural gathering represents a significant step towards fostering a supportive cycling culture in San Antonio, highlighting the power of community engagement and the joy of cycling as a shared experience.
