New York-based designer Cynthia Rowley was celebrated in style at a cocktail party held in her West Village apartment on March 4, 2024. The event marked an early tribute to her upcoming recognition at the CFDA Awards, where she is set to receive the prestigious Founder’s Award for her significant contributions to the fashion industry.
Among the guests were notable personalities, including Alan Cumming, journalist Alina Cho, and fashion entrepreneur Aurora James. The party served as a dual celebration, spotlighting both Rowley’s achievements and the Friends of the CFDA, a group dedicated to supporting the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
Reflections on a Career
During the evening, Steven Kolb, president and chief executive officer of the CFDA, shared a heartfelt story about his first encounter with Rowley 30 years ago at a fundraiser in Miami. Kolb recounted a memorable moment when he unexpectedly found himself on the runway, wearing a “beautiful white shirt” that Rowley had hand-painted with a flower. He described it as the most treasured shirt he has ever owned, symbolizing the joy Rowley brings to her designs. “It was exciting for me to share that emotional moment with you on the phone,” Kolb said, referring to their connection over the years and the significance of Rowley receiving the award.
Rowley expressed her gratitude towards Kolb, her design team, and her family, including her daughters Kit and Gigi, during her remarks. She remarked on the importance of community in fashion, saying, “We get to do fun things like this. Come into homes in New York City that have a pool in the backyard. That is not something that you get to do that often.”
A Celebration of Friendship and Fashion
Reflecting on their longstanding friendship, Rowley humorously noted her and Cumming’s association dating back to the 1900s, highlighting his unwavering support throughout her career. She acknowledged that he had attended nearly all of her runway shows, praising his talents in various fields, including theatre and literature. “There have been highs and lows through the years. Your beautiful marriage to Grant and a couple of not-so-beautiful ones of mine. You’ve always been my rock,” Rowley said while addressing Cumming.
Cumming, in turn, lauded Rowley’s unique approach to fashion, stating she has made a lasting impact on American style without conforming to industry trends. He noted that her work embodies “joy, mischief, and subversion,” qualities that he feels are often overlooked by mainstream fashion circles. Cumming referenced the words of fashion icon Diana Vreeland regarding the need for a “splash of bad taste,” reinforcing the idea that Rowley’s designs encourage personal expression and experience.
As the evening progressed, guests raised their glasses in a toast to Rowley, celebrating not only her accomplishments but also the spirit of creativity and community that the CFDA embodies. With her upcoming honor at the CFDA Awards, Rowley continues to inspire the fashion world with her vibrant designs and genuine approach to artistry.
