On November 26, 2025, Union Station Homeless Services (USHS) provided Thanksgiving meals to the Pasadena community at their Adult Center located at 412 S Raymond Blvd. The event, part of a tradition spanning over 50 years, offered both on-site dining and take-out options, ensuring that no one was turned away from a warm meal on this significant holiday.
Volunteers played a vital role in the operation, including notable figures such as actress Adina Porter, who served meals alongside Rep. Laura Friedman, Pasadena Councilmember Jessica Rivas, and Pasadena Housing Director Jim Wong. This collaboration highlighted the community’s commitment to supporting those in need, especially during a time when food insecurity is a growing concern.
Porter, attending on behalf of Feeding America, a prominent hunger relief organization, expressed her gratitude for the ongoing support in alleviating food insecurity. She remarked, “I wish we didn’t live in a world where there was so much food insecurity, but I am beyond grateful that there’s an organization like Feeding America fulfilling a need.” Porter herself faced challenges earlier in the year when she lost her home in the Eaton fire.
Generous donations also contributed to the success of the event. David Lee Roth, former lead singer of Van Halen, made significant contributions to USHS, supplemented by a $25,000 grant from the Green Foundation and $15,000 from Bigo Live. These funds were instrumental in helping the organization provide a festive Thanksgiving experience for the community.
Longstanding Tradition of Giving Back
The USHS Thanksgiving event serves as a crucial lifeline for many, especially as rising grocery prices and cuts to federal food benefits have left more individuals struggling. This year saw an increased demand for assistance, underscoring the importance of such community events.
Guests at the USHS Adult Center were treated to a traditional Thanksgiving meal prepared by USHS staff and volunteers. No personal information was required to receive a meal, allowing attendees to take home additional food for friends and family. “I am thankful for all the volunteers and staff that have helped make this year’s meal service a success, as well as all the families that come out to celebrate with us,” Friedman commented.
In addition to the efforts at USHS, community support extended to other locations, including Fair Oaks Burger in Altadena, which conducted a food giveaway. Kathryn Barger, Los Angeles County Supervisor, organized her annual Day of Giving, featuring volunteer activities aimed at aiding residents impacted by the Eaton fire. This included rebuilding efforts at a Habitat for Humanity site, as well as serving meals to seniors and supporting food distribution events.
Community Impact and Future Efforts
The enthusiasm and dedication shown by volunteers and local officials reflect a strong community spirit. Barger has hosted the Day of Giving for eight consecutive years, demonstrating a commitment to helping those in need across the Fifth District. Her involvement in various community service events highlights a proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by residents, particularly in times of crisis.
As Thanksgiving 2025 concluded, the collective efforts of organizations like USHS, Feeding America, and local volunteers emphasized the importance of community support. With food insecurity on the rise, these initiatives not only provide essential services but also foster a sense of solidarity and compassion among residents.
