Community Remembers Ruby Carole Bare Britt Hayes, 1937-2025

Ruby Carole Bare Britt Hayes, a cherished member of her community, passed away on November 22, 2025, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Born on April 17, 1937, in Ashe County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Arvil and Myrtle Phyllis Bare. Her death marks the end of a life filled with compassion and dedication to her family and community.

Hayes was preceded in death by her parents, an older brother, Clay Delano Bare, and her son, Daniel Britt. She leaves behind her husband of 33 years, Dr. Steven Hayes, and her daughter, Cythina Ferguson, who resides in Cary, North Carolina. Her legacy continues through her granddaughters, Reese and Bennett Ferguson, and her grandson, Jeb Britt of Utica, Kentucky. The family also includes her stepchildren, Stephanie Richards and Michelle McSwain, along with step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Life of Service and Community Involvement

After graduating from Elizabethton High School, Hayes trained as a medical laboratory technician and worked at Carter County Hospital. She later became an X-ray technician, contributing her skills at various urgent care facilities in the Tri-Cities and Greeneville areas. Known for her kind spirit and generosity, she was a beloved figure in her community, often recognized for her warm smile.

Hayes was an accomplished homemaker, demonstrating her talents through cooking, sewing, and even creating Halloween costumes and designer-quality clothing. Her commitment to her faith was evident through her long-standing involvement with the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton, where she served for over 60 years. As a member of the church choir, she shared her love for music and worked in the preschool program for several years.

In addition to her community service, Hayes enjoyed various hobbies, including hiking, traveling, and flower gardening. She remained active and engaged with friends and family until the final weeks of her life, reflecting her vibrant spirit.

Celebration of Life and Memorial Contributions

A celebration of Ruby’s life is scheduled for 14:00 on November 29, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton. The service will be officiated by Reverend Mark McFadden and Reverend Raymond Amos Sr., with music provided by Mrs. Debbie Gouge, Mr. David Arney, and Mrs. Susan Heaton. Friends and family are invited to gather at the church from 12:00 to 14:00 prior to the service.

Following the church service, a graveside service will take place at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will include family and friends, while honorary pallbearers will consist of John Britt, David Kelly, and Terry Bare.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in memory of Ruby to the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton or the American Cancer Society.
