Educational Initiatives for Safety in Pottsville

Seventy-five years ago, in 1950, the Pottsville School Board took proactive measures to ensure the safety of children during times of conflict. The board authorized the creation of a civil defense committee, appointing George W. Lindeman, a member of the high school faculty, as its chairman. This decision was influenced by recommendations from Secretary Howard S. Fernsler, who previously chaired the local Civil Defense Committee during World War II. This initiative reflects the board’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its students amidst global uncertainties.

Empowering Youth Through Sports in 2000

In a more recent event from 2000, Doug E. Allen, the executive director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Schuylkill County Inc., participated in a kick-boxing demonstration with two-time State Golden Glove Champion Meagan White. The event, held at Olanich’s Gym in Pottsville, marked the launch of Horizons Sports Training, a program designed to instill self-discipline and build self-esteem in at-risk youth aged 10 and above. Allen acknowledged White’s skills, stating, “She’s tough… She’s got very good boxing technique and handles herself very well in the ring.”

This demonstration not only served as an engaging activity but also emphasized the importance of mentorship and physical activity in youth development. As communities reflect on their past, they continue to inspire future generations through education, faith, and sports.
