Community Gathers to Celebrate Life of Kevin Harlowe Ortenblad
Kevin Harlowe Ortenblad, aged 69, passed away on October 17, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and faith that touched many lives. A community Open House will be held in his honor on October 25, 2025, from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Assembly of God in Willmar, Minnesota. Attendees are invited to enjoy popcorn, cookies, and coffee as they remember Kevin’s vibrant spirit.
Kevin was known for his unique sense of style, often sporting various camo apparel, and guests are encouraged to wear their own camo attire to the celebration. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Harvey Anderson & Johnson Funeral Home in Willmar, and memorials can be sent to PO Box 142, New London, MN 56273.
Born on January 26, 1956, in Willmar to Harlowe and Jean Ortenblad, Kevin graduated from Willmar High School in 1974. That same year, he married his high school sweetheart, Julie Zimmer, embarking on a journey that would see them build a family and run a farm east of Raymond for over three decades. Together, they raised five children who carry forward his values and teachings.
In 2000, a pivotal moment in Kevin’s life occurred during a men’s retreat, where he experienced a profound transformation through his faith in Jesus Christ. This event ignited a passion that defined his life, inspiring him to encourage others and share the joy he found in his faith.
In 2008, Kevin and Julie sold their farm and moved to Buena Vista, Colorado, where they established Sanctuary, a ministry retreat center dedicated to rest and renewal. Their commitment to serving others continued, as they returned to the Willmar area in 2016, nurturing the lives of their family and friends.
Kevin’s influence extended far beyond his immediate family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Julie, and their children: Kara Elliott (Somerset, WI), Kressa and Marcel Bieg (Eugene, OR), Mandy and Aaron Larson (Wayzata, MN), Melody and Brian Dengler (Woodstock, MN), and Erick and Jeanna Ortenblad (New London, MN). His legacy continues through their eleven grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy.
Kevin’s life was anchored by the conviction expressed in Romans 8:38-39, which states, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers… will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This belief shaped his interactions with others, fostering an environment of love and encouragement.
As the community gathers to celebrate Kevin’s life, those who knew him will remember his infectious smile, his laughter, and the warmth he exuded. His unwavering faith and dedication to his family and friends will leave an enduring impact, ensuring that his spirit lives on in the hearts of many.
