The head football coach of Colorado State University (CSU), Jay Norvell, has been dismissed following a disappointing homecoming loss against the University of Hawaii, where the Rams fell 31-19. The announcement was made on Sunday, and Tyson Summers, the defensive coordinator, has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Norvell, who took over the program in 2021, aimed to revitalize the Rams’ football team, but his tenure has not met expectations. The Rams currently hold a record of 2-5 for the season, a stark contrast to last year’s performance, where they finished with an 8-5 record and secured a bowl game appearance.

John Weber, the Athletic Director at CSU, acknowledged Norvell’s character and contributions to the program. In a press release, Weber stated, “Jay is a leader of the highest character who cares deeply about developing his players as athletes, students, and young men.” He emphasized the necessity for a change in leadership as the university prepares to join the Pac-12 Conference next year, stating that the program needs to compete “at the highest level.”

Weber’s decision comes as CSU looks to enhance its football program’s competitiveness. He highlighted the need for sustained excellence moving forward, saying, “While we’ve seen progress, a change in leadership is necessary to achieve the sustained excellence our program requires.”

As the university transitions into the Pac-12, a nationwide search for Norvell’s permanent successor will begin immediately. This change marks a significant moment for CSU’s football program, aiming to build a stronger foundation as it enters a new chapter in a more competitive conference landscape.
