Celebrating the Life and Legacy of James R. Knapp

The family of James Rochester Knapp, widely known as Jim, has announced his passing at the age of 89 on December 15, 2025. A prominent figure in Southern California, Jim’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to family, a successful career in law and real estate development, and a deep Christian faith that guided his actions.

Born in 1936 in San Bernardino, California, Jim’s roots in the Golden State were strong. It was during his time at Stanford University, alongside his future wife, Sally Diane Dewar, that his journey truly began. The couple married in September 1958 and later moved to San Francisco, where Jim earned his law degree from Hastings College of Law. This education paved the way for a distinguished legal career.

Jim’s professional journey began with the law firm Kindel and Anderson in Santa Ana. He soon partnered with close friends Herb Kalmbach, Frank DeMarco, and Sherwood Chillingworth to establish the Newport Beach firm Kalmbach, DeMarco, Knapp and Chillingworth. Transitioning from law to real estate, Jim became a key player in shaping Southern California’s landscape through his work with Dunn Properties and Pacific Enterprises.

In 1973, Jim founded Brookhollow, a company that became a family affair. As Chairman and strategic advisor, he found satisfaction in collaborating with his sons and later his grandsons, instilling values of hard work and integrity. His professional achievements were complemented by a strong commitment to community service.

Jim’s contributions extended beyond business. He served on the boards of organizations like Hoag Hospital and Harbor Day School, as well as Bankers Life of Nebraska. He was a founding member of both the Pacific Club and Big Canyon Country Club, and held various leadership roles within Pacific Enterprises.

Throughout their 68 years of marriage, Jim and Sally traveled extensively but always prioritized family time. Jim’s Christian faith was central to his life. He found joy in reading the Bible, listening to respected Christian leaders, and attending Mariners Church. His sharp intellect and wit made him a beloved companion, and his quiet generosity impacted many lives.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Sally Knapp, and their family, which includes children Angi Evans (Pete), Greg Knapp (Vida), and Tommy Knapp (Bethany). He leaves behind a legacy of cherished grandchildren: Robert Knapp (Jillian), James Peter “J.P.” Knapp, Clayton Knapp (Lauren), Wilson Knapp (Elise), Lance Knapp (Maggie), Samantha Knapp Meek (Brenden), Sally Evans, Charlie Evans, and George Knapp, along with five great-grandchildren and two more expected in 2026.

A service honoring Jim’s life will take place at Mariners Church on December 15 at 10:30 in the morning, followed by a private burial at Pacific View Memorial Park. The family takes comfort in knowing that Jim has completed his journey, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and family.
