Beloved Music Educator John S. Cuozzo Passes at 79

John S. Cuozzo, a cherished figure in Lafayette Township, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, at the age of 79. His life was a rich tapestry woven with music, laughter, and a steadfast commitment to both his students and the wider community. Born in Jersey City on May 7, 1946, Cuozzo’s journey began with a passion for music that would shape his entire career.

Cuozzo graduated from college in 1968 and quickly embarked on a noteworthy career in music education. He began teaching at Hoboken High School, where he spent several formative years before moving to Kittatinny Regional High School. There, he dedicated an impressive 29 years to nurturing young musicians and instilling a profound appreciation for the musical arts. His retirement in 2004 left a lasting impact on the school and the many students he inspired.

A Legacy of Musical Excellence

A gifted conductor and arranger, Cuozzo’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. He spent numerous summers at the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts, where he inspired aspiring musicians from across the United States. His distinguished career included guest conducting at Carnegie Hall and directing various New Jersey All-State Orchestras, operas, and Broadway productions. Cuozzo’s musical arrangements were celebrated at notable events nationwide, illustrating the depth of his talent and the scope of his influence.

In addition to his musical achievements, Cuozzo was committed to service. As a long-standing member of the Newton Rotary Club, he generously supported charitable initiatives, particularly those aimed at helping children in need. His dedication to community service was matched only by his love of reading and history. Cuozzo was known for his sharp wit and animated storytelling, which brought joy and laughter to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Remembering a Remarkable Life

John Cuozzo leaves behind cherished memories for his family, including his sister, Diane O’Reilly; his brother, James Cuozzo, and sister-in-law Barbara Hennig; his niece, Kristen O’Reilly; his nephews, Marc O’Reilly and Daniel O’Reilly; and several great-nieces and great-nephews, among many extended family members and close friends.

His life can be described as a symphony, resonating with music, laughter, and love. Cuozzo’s memory will continue to inspire and uplift those he leaves behind.

Visitation is scheduled for February 27, 2026, from 15:00 to 19:00 at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, located at 63 High Street, Newton, New Jersey. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 on February 28, 2026, at Christ Episcopal Church, situated at 62 Main Street in Newton.
