Warren County Nutrition is actively supporting seniors and residents with disabilities across Warren County through its comprehensive meal delivery program. Since its inception in 1978, the initiative has provided essential meal services and wellness checks to those unable to prepare food for themselves or who struggle to leave their homes.
Consistent Meal Delivery Services
The program ensures reliable meal delivery from Monday to Friday, with services suspended only during severe weather events. According to Marty Davis, Director of Warren County Nutrition, the consistency of the service is crucial. “We deliver Monday through Friday, weather events excluded. Any day the county is open, we deliver meals. It’s not just a meal, it’s a welfare check,” Davis explained in an interview with KNIA News.
While the community of Carlisle continues to offer an in-person congregate meal site five days a week, both Indianola and Norwalk have transitioned to delivery-only locations. This adaptation allows the program to reach a wider audience, particularly in rural areas where access to food can be more challenging.
Targeted Support for Vulnerable Residents
Warren County Nutrition primarily serves residents aged 60 and older, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers of qualifying individuals. Eligibility for the program is determined based on individual need. Each month, the service supports approximately 300 to 325 clients, addressing a critical gap in food security and social support within the community.
In addition to delivering meals, the delivery drivers conduct brief wellness checks, ensuring clients are safe and accounted for during their regular visits. This dual purpose not only provides nourishment but also fosters a sense of community and wellbeing among vulnerable populations.
