Walter F. Currie, 91, Remembered as Pioneer in Aerospace Industry

Walter F. Currie, a notable figure in the aerospace industry, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, at the age of 91, after a courageous decade-long battle with cancer. Surrounded by his family, Currie’s passing marks the end of a life filled with significant accomplishments and deep familial ties.

Born on February 11, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Floyd and Stella Currie, Walter was the only child in his family. His early life was shaped by a close-knit upbringing that fostered a strong connection to his Kentucky roots. In 1950, Currie’s life took a pivotal turn when he met his future wife, Catherine Louise Shelburn, a classmate at Atherton High School. Their relationship blossomed during their high school years, leading them to attend the University of Kentucky together.

At the university, Currie pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering, graduating in 1956. His time at Kentucky was characterized by a commitment to his studies and extracurricular activities. He joined the Air Force ROTC and pledged to the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, embodying the school spirit that he carried throughout his life.

In 1961, Currie established Currie Aerospace Associates, an independent sales organization representing national electronics manufacturers. The company began in a modest setting—a spare bedroom in their rented home on Louvre Avenue in Lake Conway Estates. Currie took on the role of sales engineer, while Catherine managed administrative duties. Under Currie’s leadership, the firm grew and eventually became known as Currie, Peak, and Frazier, Inc., employing 36 individuals at its peak.

Currie was not only a businessman but also a devoted family man. He took immense pride in his family, actively engaging with their personal and educational pursuits. His belief in the importance of knowledge and understanding was a hallmark of his character. Currie was known for his willingness to share his expertise, encouraging his loved ones to grasp how things worked.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Currie; his sons, Scott Currie of Mosier, Oregon, and Beau Currie of Windermere, Florida; and five grandchildren: Trevor Currie of Missoula, Montana; Lucas Currie of Playa Grande, Costa Rica; Charles Summers of New York City, New York; Nathan Currie of Hailey, Idaho; and Amanda Summers of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A private memorial service will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, where Currie’s cremated remains will be interred alongside his parents, Floyd and Stella Currie. This section of the cemetery holds historical significance, originally arranged by Colonel George E. Currie in 1894.

Walter F. Currie’s legacy as a dedicated husband, father, and pioneering entrepreneur will be cherished by all who knew him. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for the love and support he provided to his family throughout his life.
