New Wishbone Bridge in Austin Set to Transform Outdoor Access

A new pedestrian and cycling bridge, shaped like a wishbone, is nearing completion in Austin, Texas, promising an enhanced experience for runners, walkers, and cyclists. Situated over Lady Bird Lake near Longhorn Dam, the bridge has been under construction for two years and is expected to open by the end of this year.

The project has been largely hidden from view, enclosed by construction fences. As work progresses, residents are beginning to see the transformation taking place. The City of Austin’s Capital Delivery Services Department has announced plans for a public celebration in early January 2024, marking the bridge’s official opening.

Genest Landry, Assistant Director with Austin Capital Delivery Services, stated, “There’s going to be some cleanup that needs to happen. We still have landscaping, lighting, and amenities on the bridge itself.” Visitors will soon be able to enjoy a shaded plaza adorned with plants, benches, and captivating views of both sunrise and sunset.

Safety remains a paramount concern for this project. Landry emphasized that the bridge will provide a secure passage across Lady Bird Lake, connecting the north and south shores of the park. This pedestrian and bicycle bridge will be completely separated from vehicular traffic, enhancing safety for all users.

In addition to the bridge, a tunnel will run beneath Pleasant Valley Road, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to cross the busy thoroughfare without having to navigate heavy traffic. This tunnel has been meticulously designed to withstand flooding events, addressing previous safety concerns associated with an older tunnel that had poor lighting and frequently flooded.

“Before this project started, we had an existing tunnel that was about seven feet tall and five feet wide, with very poor lighting. It would frequently flood, just uncomfortable conditions,” Landry explained. The new design incorporates community input, with children and local residents contributing to the artwork that will line the tunnel’s walls. A mosaic mural featuring handprints from community workshops will greet visitors at the tunnel’s entrance.

The project has been funded through the City of Austin’s 2020 Mobility Bond, with a total expenditure of approximately $22 million. The wishbone bridge is set to significantly enhance outdoor access for residents and visitors alike, fostering a healthier lifestyle while enjoying the natural beauty of the area. As the completion date approaches, the anticipation for this new addition to Austin’s landscape continues to grow.
