Jonathan Van Ness Defends Weight Loss Journey Amid Backlash

Jonathan Van Ness, best known for his role on “Queer Eye,” has responded to criticism following his notable weight loss of 70 pounds, attributed to the weight loss medication GLP-1. On October 30, 2023, Van Ness addressed his followers on TikTok, emphasizing his commitment to body neutrality amid accusations that his weight loss undermines the principles of body positivity.

In the TikTok video, the 38-year-old star asserted, “The way that you look does not define your worth, doesn’t define your lovableness. You are worth love and worth celebration, no matter what your body looks like.” He explained that his decision to use GLP-1 was influenced by a “medical issue” he faced in 2023, stating he “just didn’t feel good” prior to starting the medication.

Van Ness also shared insights into his fitness journey, mentioning that he has incorporated Pilates into his routine. He expressed a newfound confidence, stating, “My body’s never in my whole life — I’ve always wanted to have an ab. I’ve never had abs. And I feel really good, so I’m taking my shirt off a lot.” He further added, “I was always really cute, and I always felt cute. But I just didn’t feel good, and now I feel good.”

In January, Van Ness openly discussed his use of GLP-1, which includes medications like Ozempic, aimed at managing diabetes and supporting weight loss. He revealed that he had lost 66 pounds at that time and shared before-and-after photos on Instagram to document his transformation. “Yes, I am on a GLP-1 or a weight-loss medication,” he stated, acknowledging his struggles with weight fluctuations over the years.

Van Ness noted that he began using GLP-1 injections in September 2024, describing an immediate improvement in his well-being following a period of struggling with binge eating disorder. He remarked, “I was consistently making decisions that I regretted with compulsive eating… it left me feeling really not good, depressed, and out of control.”

His candidness about using medication to regain control over his eating habits has resonated with many of his fans. “For the first time in my life, I have had control over my food intake. It has helped me so massively,” he explained. Van Ness emphasized the importance of seeking help, stating, “I want to be honest with you about it because I know how important asking for help is.”
