In an effort to enhance skin cancer awareness among local farmers, a significant meeting took place in Moultrie, Georgia, in February 2026. The initiative was sparked by concerns raised by Preston Jimmerson, owner of Moss Family Farms, during a fall 2025 meeting of the Colquitt County Archway Partnership. Jimmerson highlighted the pressing need for improved education on skin cancer, given that many farmers spend extensive hours outdoors under direct sunlight.
Collaboration Among Local Experts
Responding to Jimmerson’s concerns, a collaborative effort was launched by Matthew Clifton, Vice President of Ancillary Services at Colquitt Regional Medical Center; Jeremy Kichler, Colquitt County Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent; and Sara Hand, a professional from the Archway Partnership. Their aim was to facilitate direct access to healthcare knowledge for the agricultural community in a familiar and approachable environment.
To this end, over 45 farmers, crop consultants, and agricultural industry representatives attended the educational meeting. The event featured a presentation by Dr. David Green, a family medicine resident with Georgia South Medical Education. Dr. Green provided valuable insights on identifying early signs of skin cancer and shared effective strategies for sun protection.
On-Site Screenings and Community Engagement
Following Dr. Green’s presentation, attendees had the opportunity to participate in on-site skin cancer screenings conducted by Dr. Green and his colleague, Dr. Christian Edwards, also a family medicine resident. The presence of Dr. Kayla Batchelor, the attending physician overseeing the residents, was crucial in coordinating this educational session.
The initiative is part of the ongoing efforts of the Archway Partnership, which is one of eight units within the University of Georgia Public Service and Outreach program, dedicated to serving communities throughout the state. Renowned for its innovative approach to community engagement, the Archway Partnership received the 2025 APLU Innovation & Economic Prosperity Award and has generated more than $22.9 million in return on investment for Georgia communities over the last three years.
