Mary Ruth Ingleby, a beloved educator and advocate, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 7, 2025, at the age of 75 after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born on June 22, 1950, in Salt Lake City, she was the third child of Don and Lavon Ingleby and grew up in a large family that included two brothers and four sisters.

Mary’s life was profoundly shaped by her experiences, particularly the difficult decision to place her first child for adoption at the age of sixteen. This event ignited her passion for education, guiding her to a career dedicated to nurturing the minds of young children. She earned an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Cabrillo College and devoted many years to teaching children aged three to five. Among her students was her second child, Damian Ingleby, who developed a lasting love for reading and education.

A Life Dedicated to Community and Compassion

For over five decades, Mary made Santa Cruz her home, where her love for the ocean and community flourished. She was deeply committed to animal welfare and often advocated for marginalized groups, dedicating time and resources to these causes. Her compassion extended beyond advocacy; Mary was also a passionate lover of music. She participated in numerous choirs and singing duos, creating a home filled with melodies and joy.

Later in life, Mary reconnected with her first child, Bill. Their relationship blossomed, allowing them to share meaningful experiences before his untimely passing in his mid-thirties. Mary is survived by her son Damian and her younger sister Colette Ingleby, who cherished their time together.

Memorial Gathering to Celebrate Her Life

A memorial gathering will take place at Seacliff State Beach on October 18, 2025, at 12:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to honor Mary’s memory and her contributions to the community. For further information, attendees can call 406-552-9696 or email [email protected].

Mary Ingleby’s legacy as an educator, advocate, and loving family member will continue to inspire those who knew her. Her impact on education and community service remains a testament to her compassionate spirit.
